Every year Dr. Stone speaks to my abnormal psychology class on the topic of impulse-control disorders. He is an expert in the clinical application of hypnosis and has many case examples to support his extensive theoretical knowledge. I wanted to send a quick email to let you know that I took your stop smoking class at the Discovery Center January 12. Yesterday marked 21 days of being smoke free! Just to give you a little insight. I was going on 21 years of smoking (I started as a teenager) and logically, I knew I needed to quit. However, I loved smoking so much that I did not think I was emotionally ready. About two minutes before your class, I stood outside finishing (actually relishing) a cigarette, talking on the phone to a friend. My friend rattled off 15 reasons why I should hate smoking. My friend was trying to be helpful, but I could feel my anger rising. I told her the worst thing you can do to a smoker is try to bully them into quitting; we just get defensive! I told her the best I could hope for from your class was that you might be able to help me WANT to quit. Before your stop smoking class I had no true interest in quitting. But after that night’s class, something magical happened! I walked out a non-smoker and have never looked back. It’s so weird—I have never not wanted to smoke. I know it’s only been 21 days, but what is different is that I have absolutely no interest in smoking. I barely recognize myself. I have been sharing my success story with anybody that may be inspired to change.
